Searching the Catalog

You can search the WHS catalog by keyword, title, or author.

To find the book physically in the WHS library, take note of the title and call number (call #).

If you get stuck, you are always welcome to ask for help at the front desk!

What's a Call Number?

A Call Number is like an address for a book, telling you where you can find that book in the library. It might include a short label, or it could be just a Dewey Decimal number. It's printed on the spine of each book. Most call numbers end with the first three letters of the author's name, so books are alphabetical in each category on the shelf. When you search for a book in the catalog, write down its call number to find where it is.

Fiction

The WHS library fiction section is organized by genre. Call numbers for fiction books will start with a short code that tells you what genre section the book is in:

  • ADVENTURE fiction is near the middle of the library

  • CHILDREN'S literature is near the computer lab area

  • CLASSIC is near the middle of the library

  • FANTASY is near the middle of the library

  • GRAPHIC novels are near the rocking chairs

  • HISTORICAL fiction is near the middle of the library

  • HORROR is near the middle of the library

  • MYSTERY is near the middle of the library

  • REALISTIC fiction is near the middle of the library

  • SC stands for STORY COLLECTIONS, which are near the the computer lab area

  • SCIFI (science fiction) is near the middle of the library

  • SPORTS fiction is near the middle of the library

Nonfiction

Most nonfiction books are organized numerically according to their Dewey Decimal number. There are a few exceptions:

  • Biographies and memoirs are alphabetical by subject (the person the biography is about), not by author.

  • 921 is the Dewey Decimal number for biographies, located near the back windows/patio door

  • MEM is the code for memoirs, directly beside biographies near the back windows/patio door

  • MYTHOLOGY is near computer lab area. Some mythology is considered fiction and some is considered nonfiction.
